S8E5 Livewatch!

Livewatch

This is the livewatch thread for S8E5!

This episode will be the second performances for Group A: Mianmian & Wen Ning, Song Lan & Xue Yang, Xiao Xingchen & A-Qing, and Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji.

The format: Juniors choose the songs. All duos except Mianmian & Wen Ning, who won the last episode, will do a song.

The audience will vote, bottom pair is eliminated (for the rest of the episode, not the show), the other two + MM/WN each do a song, audience votes again for winner.

cryptic_echo
I hate when they do this format. If the audience liked them the best, obviously we want to hear MORE of them, not less!

FalconersFan99
Yeah, very weird. I guess the idea is that since they only have to prep one song, they get a bit of a break as their reward?

cryptic_echo
Oh yeah, I hadn't thought of that. But still! More Seeing is Believing! Not less!

worrisome_beginner883
Blind Box up first! Can't wait to see what they've got this time!

CrimsonKrafter
Huh, I feel like 三生三世(Three Lives, Three Worlds) is maybe an odd choice? But dang A-Qing sounds good, I love what she's doing.

Questioninglyobservant
Oh! Oh you guys! I get what they're doing here! Xiao Xingchen is basically singing the original, and A-Qing is doing Su Yunying's cover! Ahhhhh, this was so smart! I love it!

normalselfcontrol589
Ohhhhhhh you're so right! How clever. Good choice, A-Qing.

hard_to_find93
She did mention she's never watched Eternal Love but fell in love with the song when someone did it on another variety show.

normalselfcontrol589
Putting the clues together. We're a bunch of real music detectives here.

imnothere8456
That's gonna be a hard one to beat. What do you think Xue Yang has picked out?

zestyzeppelin98
IDK, he was acting so squirrelly during the stupid opening game?

machoinsurer_6
It wasn't as stupid as the last couple games, at least.

cryptic_echo
I missed it, what did they have to do this time?

machoinsurer_6
Each pair got two common phrases and had to draw pictures of them, then take photos of the whiteboard drawings with (you'll never guess) a Xiaomi Mix Fold. Then they looked at the other groups' photos and the pair who guessed the most right got to pick their order first while the group whose photos got guessed the most got to pick second. Song Lan and Xue Yang were the losers who did not get to pick at all, thus they're stuck in the middle.

available_melodrama44
Jay Chou, always a bold strategy, we'll see if it pays off.

twelve_potatoes
I don't always like Jay Chou, but 错过的烟火(The Fireworks I Missed) is ok.

NecessaryManga_
I think he chose the wrong Jay Chou song for the two of them, but it's not bad. Like tenth on my list of Jay Chou songs I'd pick for these two.

gigglecannon3
They sound good but why am I so bored? This performance is confusing.

GlisteningCavity
Confusing?

gigglecannon3
I mean, I don't get why it feels boring to me. They both sound fine, they both have their usual amounts of stage presence. But I still feel like... nothing is happening.

GlisteningCavity
Don't worry, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are next. I'm sure they'll make this feel like an incredibly dynamic performance

OhNoINeedAUsername777
LMAO "I don't know any pop music so actually my brother chose my songs, not me" SHOCKING

ColorfulIteration12
你不是一个人? Huh. Is his brother trying to tell us something?

sockpuppet23483
Oh for fuck's sake, this song is not gay. It was not intended to be gay.

SleepilyDefinite83
Uh-huh.

ColorfulIteration12
And yet you assume that's what I meant.

hard_to_find93
Oh wow. Why do these two get the first really cool stage set of the season?

cageywindfall132
They're probably just the first two to ask for something like this.

TheDraftyCropping
I kind of love that Lan Wangji is stuck in the middle of the ocean with no obvious way to get down. Don't let that boy walk across the stage.

NumberlessH0meland
Did Lan Wangji get an emotion chip installed since last week? Or however many weeks ago?

YellowishBooty
Right? I mean he's not exactly Joker Xue levels of dramatic or anything but he seems to be making an effort!

LightIntersection
If he'd sung like this last week I could've forgiven his ridiculously awkward movements.

unrulyprivacy
Yay! I'm so glad Lan Wangji gets to really show what he can do with this song!

sudden_encouragement
Ah, I like Wei Wuxian's wandering through the forest path.

NumberlessH0meland
It makes sense—if LWJ is going to stay in one place the whole time, at least WWX is moving around a bit to give the performance some variety.

AbsurdNexus
He does have his own hill to go up on—oh yep there he goes. Okay now he's probably stuck like Lan Wangji lol

SleepilyDefinite83
Uhhhh why? Is this maybe my favorite performance of the night so far??

normalselfcontrol589
IDK, I don't think it's quite as good as Blind Box but it's way better than I was expecting.

SleepilyDefinite83
Blind Box sounded great, but they both just stood there the whole time. At least WWX walking around made this a little more interesting. I feel like this is a better performance overall.

linfuren
MARRY ME LIN HAI!!

FalconersFan99
You're late.

linfuren
I had to pick up a kid from a friend's house. *sigh* She has no respect for her mommy's attempt to seduce TV hosts via Reddit.

twelve_potatoes
Wow. I don't think anyone saw that coming. Rise to the Challenge edges out Music Through The Snow to go to the second round against Blind Box and Seeing is Believing!

mianmianmian11
I wouldn't have believed you yesterday, but after today's song I'm not that shocked. I still thought Song Lan and Xue Yang would pull it off, but I'm not shocked.

neonn3bula
OMG Wen Ning is so precious! He's so worried about competing against Wei-laoshi!

mianmianmian11
Mianmian is NOT.

neonn3bula
Weren't she and Wei Wuxian dating at one point? Is there bad blood there?

mianmianmian11
Yes, but as far as I know no. They dated for like a couple months a decade ago. They've been friends ever since (of course, their strong CP following is convinced they never broke up and are in fact married, but Mianmian has dated like five other guys since then, a couple for way longer than they were together).

99_red_balloonsxx
Just saying, they're both aging out of idol territory now, it will be VERY interesting to see what happens now that WWX isn't under as much pressure to stay single.

CrimsonKrafter
They're both clearly joking about kicking each other's asses. No bad blood.

banterbeagle
Okay but he picked one of his sister's songs for them to perform???? This absolute cinnamon roll!!!

normalselfcontrol589
I hope he okayed it with her first - she might have wanted to use it with Qin Su at some point! LOL

Karma-Ho
Oh they've still got it for sure. Honestly I think we might have our winners right here.

junebug_girl
IDK I think Bao Shan and Jingyi are going to have some surprises up their sleeve for us!

Karma-Ho
Yeah, but historically the Our Song studio audience does not always reward experimental-feeling performances, which is what we're most likely to get from those two.

x_RegularlyForsaken
I'd never heard of Wen Ning before, but this show has definitely served its purpose. I just went and downloaded his whole first album.

zestyzeppelin98
It's kind of sweet for A-Qing to choose one of Xiao Xingchen's older songs? She doesn't have much of her own yet so capitalizing on the fact that her partner has like 30 years' worth of good stuff is smart.

GlisteningCavity
Unfortunately, it's just not really her style. She really should have kept on channeling Su Yunying and put some flair into her half, this is basically just like Xiao Xingchen + Xiao Xingchen (girl edition) singing together.

zestyzeppelin98
I mean, a LOT of performances on this show basically come down to that, often without even the different genders to lend it something new.

GlisteningCavity
Yeah but that doesn't make it good.

worrisome_beginner883
I love this song, and I love how their voices blend on the harmonies!

OhNoINeedAUsername777
I feel like this is basically no better or worse than their first performance. Not up to MM/WN's level. Last week I would have said they'll take second no problem, but if We Rise to the Challenge do as well as they did on the first one it could be very tight.

NumberlessH0meland
Calling it now: That first performance was a fluke. WWX and LWJ will be right back where they were last week. Which is to say WWX will give a perfectly fine, if not terribly exciting, performance and LWJ will be an automaton.

MadlySoulful
I think it all depends on their song choice. WWX was playing it too safe last week, trying to pick something of his own that would fit LWJ—when the truth is none of WWX's best stuff will ever fit LWJ. And that OST song was definitely one of his more safe and mediocre recent singles, even if it was a hit. LWJ's brother had a great idea for their first song, maybe he has a hidden talent for this.

82UsuallyClassy
I heard his brother is his manager? In which case, it kinda makes sense that he'd know what direction to push them in, right? That's his job.

moment_of_truth
Seriously? They're gonna go for a song this iconic? I mean people do iconic classics all the time, but a modern song this iconic, so there aren't already like a million covers? If they don't blow it out of the water it'll be a disaster.

extrovertedRetailer
Oh this is not gonna go well. Sure, LWJ managed to show some emotion on that last song, but this song is ALL emotion.

ArseTechnica MOD
Eh. I feel like "iconic" is a little much. Popular, sure. And it's a good song. But like, most people are doing popular, good songs. It's not like you never see 男孩 on variety shows.

waywaywuxian
Yeah, it's a good song, but come on.

TheDraftyCropping
Well, smart choice putting him at a piano! More not moving for Lan Wangji!

YellowishBooty
LOL At least he can play well.

flawed_laurels29
Oh. Oh, this is... good?

floppyvalidity7088
I'm reserving judgment until the chorus. That's where the pain really has to come through in his voice.

flawed_laurels29
Probably smart for Wei Wuxian to take over and do the heavy lifting on the chorus—but ooh! Nice harmonies!

banterbeagle
It is! Like, maybe not amazing, but it is very definitely good.

gigglecannon3
Definitely not in the same league as Mianmian & Wen Ning, but better than I was expecting!

LightIntersection
Guys I think I legit love this. Like, they're not Liang Bo, but they're kind of not trying to be? They've got their own interpretation, neither of them has the huskiness of his voice so they're doing what works for their voices, and it's working.

SleepilyDefinite83
Same. This is so, so working for me.

NumberlessH0meland
This guy at the piano canNOT be the same guy we saw last time. I think Wei Wuxian killed Lan Wangji and hired a body double.

MadlySoulful
Is he?? Is he just improvising riffs on the piano?

YellowishBooty
I believe so. Wow.

sudden_encouragement
Either that or he wrote a new piano solo to perform for this

AbsurdNexus
No, I think that's improv. I've listened to his guqin compositions, I honestly think if he'd had even a day to write something it would be more complex than this. He's sticking to, like, standard chords and stuff that make it easy to play something that sounds good off the cuff.

82UsuallyClassy
And did you hear how the band joined back in like one beat late? He told them "come back in when I go into this bit" to pull out of the improv and into the build at the end.

extrovertedRetailer
Wei Wuxian looks so proud of him!

flawed_laurels29
And a little turned on? Who said that?

TheDraftyCropping
Wei Wuxian's face said that. Loud and clear to the whole damn audience. And he is so valid for that.

waywaywuxian
SO valid.

ColorfulIteration12
Ok Wei Wuxian taking on the heavier emotional bits himself to keep Lan Wangji's lack of expression from taking over was a good choice, but letting him loose on those lines toward the end was ALSO a good choice. I think maybe WWX wanted to make sure LWJ had a chance to work up to that? Does that make sense?

extrovertedRetailer
Yeah, no, I see what you mean. Like maybe he couldn't have dived right into the first chorus with the pain like WWX did but tbh I think the piano solo took him somewhere that let him dig into the last bit.

NumberlessH0meland
Ok, sorry, I am a big enough person to admit when I'm wrong. The first performance was not a fluke. This one is better. Musically maybe not better, just as good, but this gave us one thing that one couldn't by its very nature: I feel like they're actually clicking as a duo all of a sudden. Like, there's synergy of some kind happening there. The kind of thing that came naturally for Mainmian & Wen Ning from the moment they started their audition duet, that Xiao Xingchen & A-Qing are still honestly struggling with (and that Song Lan & Xue Yang seemed to have no problem with last week but fell apart this week). This feels like it was a creative collaboration between two incredibly talented people, where their first two performances (yes, even the one tonight) felt more like Wei Wuxian probably made most of the creative decisions and Lan Wangji just went along with it because he's the junior and he should defer to his senior.

sudden_encouragement
Yes!! I am actually legit excited to see what they do next! I'm sure not every single performance will be amazing from here on out, but I think they're just as much the pair to watch as Seeing is Believing—and I think maybe more likely to deliver unexpected gems.

strangetoxicity52
You put it perfectly.
